I took my HHR to the dealer around 50,000 mile and they did a transmission flush. (mine is an auto). The owner's manual says change at 50,000 under "hard" use. I don't drive my HHR hard. But I tend to over maintain my cars.

My getrag in my 87 Fiero, I had the clutch replaced at 75,000 and the clutch master and slave just last year after 130,000 miles. But I'm still having issues and I have another clutch ready to go in, scheduled May 3. The labor is the cost and I don't know what issues will be found when the transmission is removed from the engine.

Mine can be a little stubborn getting it into reverse when cold, but nothing like the old cars were in the winter in cold climates. Of course in those days the transmissions were filled with 90# gear lube which really got thick when cold.

Hey Sd.....funny you pose that question. While coming down the 2 lane the other day at 80K-90k looking at the tach I couldn't help but think the gear box needed a 6th gear. Turning 2grand plus anywhere over the 80kph mark in 5th gear it made think that at 100kph or 60 mph I would easily be at 2500 rpm. Not as fuel efficient as the 2.4 L could be with the 6th gear. Also downshift from 3rd into second requires some a punch on the accerlerator to match up. Price to be paid I guess for the spunky low end. I agree that the gearing would probably of benefitted from the 6 speed box. Any one out there know of a swap that would work....Hmmmmmm. Thanks for posting what I was thinking LOL.

I've got an issue where mine won't go into reverse until I put it back into 1st, then it goes. But it only happens once in a great while so the dealer can't figure it out. Of coarse it NEVER does it when they have it.

Has anyone changed their hhr ss 5 speed manual trans final drive ratio? I would love to lower the rpm`s @ 80 mph and give up a little standing start acceleration

2008 hhr ss 5 spd manual

On my HHR SS I also drop it in 2nd then to 1st... Seems to go easier. But I do have a hard time sometimes getting it into 5th... Seems I read somewhere there are cables to grease etc.. Anyone know if this is true? And if so can you access from jacking vehicle up and what type of grease to use? Thanks..
