The best advice in the article is to get your own code scanner. Just knowing the code can go a long way toward having an idea as to how quickly you should resolve the issue.

Rule of thumb: If the light it solid and the car is running smooth, you can keep driving with the idea of getting it check soon. If the light is solid but it's running rough, get it looked at right away. If its a flashing light, pull over and shut it off.
