Cleaning up Worn Parts
Careful... When you start top fixing actual visual imperfections you may get carried away as I sort of did. A little then and now.

I was actually thinking about painting them a darker color. I photoshopped it to see what it would look like but I didn't like the way it looks with the dark blue so I'll be sticking to silver. Love the way it tuned out on your ride, though!
I'm going to just take the hub caps off first to see how the wheels look without them. Then I'll paint them if I think I need to.

If theres one thing I cant stand is fogged out headlights. Any of the 3m type restoration kits work great and fairly easy. Just make sure to tape off painted edges, cuz you will acidentally buff up against them and it will take the paint off if you hit it for too long.
I also have a kits that doesn't require buffing, just wiping, but not sure it work as good.
If you don't trust yourself, a body shop will do it for peanuts. To me, it makes a huge difference, especially if your paintwork is good.

Had to push this back a couple days for medical reasons. My eye's better now, so I worked on the car today.

most pressing issue is does anybody know the part # for the rear chevy emblem off-hand? Mine sort of broke in half when I took it off. I might just CAD it up and have my friend print a replica, but I'd prefer to just order the part.
on to touching up the hub caps,

here's how the car looks without them on.

pulled the hub caps off

sanded, 150 grit then 220

washed and masked

paint I used

silver

clear coat

close-up on the wheel. not the best paint job, but it at least looks better now.

here they are back on the HHR

I used this kit on the headlight

before

and after. worked a treat!
I also replaced the $60 radio harness from walmart with a $10 one from qualityaudiovideo.com. saved money and the chime sounds much better too!
But yeah, if anybody knows where I can get a new rear chevy logo, please do let me know.
edit: does this look right? http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-06-11-CH...-/302010908322

here's how the emblem looks right now. I didn't want to leave an awkward gap on my hatch.

The easiest and quickest way to find part numbers is to go to any online GM parts store and look there, like gmpartsoutlet.net.
Then if you don't like their price go to eBay and plop the part number into the search bar.
Yes, that says it is right. "any Chevy tailgate bowtie"
