What commands the cooling fan to come on in a 2006 2.4? I noticed that when I started the car in my driveway the fan came on..... Ac wasn't on and coolant temp was 176 since it had been sitting ..... I pulled into the garage and cut it off, restarted and the fan came on again...... Weird. Anyway like five minutes later I put my son's seat in, got him settled, started the car and the fan didn't come on....... I'm stumped! A glitch perhaps?

Also to add when I stopped the car before this the fan was off.

Coolant temperature and the A/C switched to on.
Did you replace just the fan awhile ago?

Like a year ago. Still functioning perfectly. Like I said that's what I thought too about coolant temp and AC but neither were a factor. I vaguely remember something about trans temp but it had been sitting a while so I don't know what could have made it switch on. The second start the fan relay clicked right as the motor started. Loose relay or something maybe??

Check it out, loose connections, corrosion on the grounds

Dielectric grease is very helpful for connections. But they must be clean & good connecting first.

Defrost? Defrost/floor? Recirculate?

About the only thing I can think of is a bare wire somewhere. The ECM supplies ground to the relay.

Nope, none of the above. Didn't happen at all Yesterday or this morning. When the fan is SUPPOSED to come on it does so, such as AC turned on or what have you. Very strange, like you guys said it must be something electrical, though all wires and such look good. No real corrosion to speak of since its a Florida car. Hey, I guess its better that the fan is mysteriously turning ON than not working or turning OFF. lol. I have been checking coolant stone cold for the past week (before this happened) and its been dead on every morning. Just an odd mishap. HEY DON! didn't you once post a list of commands for the fan? I was looking for it, just couldn't find it again Like I said previously, my first worry was the Transmission temp, because I THINK I remember that can trigger a fan on condition, but this happened after the car had been sitting, and the fan wasn't running prior to shutdown when I first parked it, and the coolant was at about 176 like I said.

The ECT signal and LOE REF in the above schematic go to the ECT on the t-stat housing. As far as I can tell that's the only input other than the serial data, (that would be AC on signal). SS is a bit different with the variable speed fan, but uses the same relay signal.

Can you clear up these acronyms? ECT and LOE REF. Thanks.
