x2 Lack of maintenance killed more of those engines than the dexcool did. Internet lore and wives tales will never die.

This is the truth!

While the web has helped many solve issues it also has led many away from the truth on what is really the issues and how to solve them correctly.

I wish GM or the makers of Dex Cool would speak up more on the proper use of the product and teach people how to use it properly.

It really is a better product but it needs to be used correctly.

Often the gasket issues were also due to bad gasket or engine issues not the coolant.

Actually I drive a 1999 Chevy Lumina with the 3100 engine. The intake gaskets needed to be replaced, but that has nothing to do with Dex-Cool. The original owner had it changed to Prestone (green stuff) when she got it because she was afraid of Dex-Cool.

When I change my coolant in the HHR (probably this coming summer) it's getting Dex-Cool back into it...

I wouldn't blame Dex-Cool for that.. The rubber seal gets stuck in the T-Stat & won't let it close fully, in many cases..

If we had have issues with this coolant we would have had many threads here with issues. These cars have been on the road enough to have shown coolant issues by now. To be honest I think the gaskest used on the engine in question were the issue more than anything. They may have been made of the wrong material to be used with Dex Cool.

Worked on hundreds of 3.4's when I worked for a Pontiac/GMC dealer and never saw one have an issue related to BAD DEX-COOL. Did see many that were mixed with grean and even they did not have directly related issues. Infact I have always considered the 3.4/3.1/and 3.8's to have very forgiving bottom ends as they could run a long time with oil/coolant mixed in the engine. Perhaps climate has a lot to do with my expirience though.
