When you say its a different color, I'm assuming its just the mirror cap that is a different color. The mirror caps do pop off, so there is no need to take the whole mirror off, if it works fine. I believe you just start from the bottom and the cap will pop off and then just pop the other mirror cap on. I think that would be easier than messing with the door panel. I watched the dealer do that to mine, because someone scratched my mirror and they just took it off and painted it and then just put the cap back on.
