Sometimes fan comes on, others time I have to pound on passenger side dash and comes on but sounds sad. Once awhile closing passenger side door turns it on. What is the issue?

Its a 2011 LT2 2.4L.

If it sounds sad, then I would say the fan motor is going bad.

thats my thought. Just oddpounding on the dash or door closes make it come back on.
Fans for these are expensive even from Auto zone! But last time I replaced a fan on a car it was in 2000 and was a old car.

The blower fan on the HHR's is apparently a pain to change. I believe the original is molded into the duct housing and has to be cut out.

Can I buy a blower without the plastic ring seal and just reuse the old one?

I changed my fan in my 2006 due to the infamous 2006 model water leak issue. Luckily I purchased the car used and the original had already been cut out so replacement took all but five minute (you just have to lay in a somewhat awkward position... I found myself upside down changing it!!). Thinking I would have to cut the original one out I watched countless videos on the procedure and it really doesn't seem that bad. If you don't want to cut the motor out you essentially have to replace4 the entire HVAC system as it is assembled as a complete piece!

FIRST; take the glovebox out and inspect the cabin air filter and look for debris in the fan.

Blower Motor Replacement
Removal Procedure

Remove the right sound insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Replacement .
Remove the instrument panel (I/P) compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Replacement .
Disconnect the blower motor electrical connector.

Remove the lower blower motor cover retaining screws.
Remove the lower blower motor cover.

Remove the blower motor nuts.

Important: Cut through the case as straight as possible because the motor cup must be reused. In order to prevent damage to the component, do not cut any deeper than necessary to remove the motor cup.

Remove the blower motor and cup from the lower case by cutting through the case between the circular ribs around the motor with a sharp utility knife.

Release the blower motor retaining tab and remove the motor from the cup.
Installation Procedure

Install the blower motor (1) into the motor cup (2) that was cut out of the lower case.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

Install the blower motor nuts (3).
Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 2.4 N·m (21 lb in).

Attach the service ring (4) to the motor cup (2) with the screws (5) included in the kit.
Tighten
Tighten the screws to 1.8 N·m (15 lb in).

Install the blower motor and service ring into the HVAC module using the screws (5) included in the kit. Make certain the blower motor electrical connector is pointing rearward in the vehicle.
Tighten
Tighten the screws to 1.8 N·m (15 lb in).


Install the lower blower motor cover.
Install the lower blower motor cover retaining screws.
Tighten
Tighten the screws to 1.8 N·m (15 lb in).





Connect the blower motor electrical connector.
Install the I/P compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Replacement .
Install the right sound insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Replacement .

I replaced mine a couple of months ago. I think I bought it from CarParts.com for about $40. I found a You Tube video that had a link. I'd look it up for you but somebody broke into my house and took my laptop among other things.
