Gas mileage drop after air filter install

I recently change my air filter. Before the change the gauge on the dash would range between 24.8 to 25.7 depending on how much around town driving I did on the weekend. Now it is 23.3 to 23.6. I undid everything to check the direction of the filter to make sure I had it in the correct direction. I think it is correct based on the how to thread on the forum. With the top of the housing down I have the gasket down with the paper portion of the filter up (if that makes sense) I checked to make sure the MAF sensor was plugged in all the way. Any suggestiions?

Any codes? If not disconnect the negative battery cable for 30 minutes, the MAF sensor may need a reboot

The filter will only go in the "right" way.

Reconnected the rubber hoses tightly? Including the breather hose and the Cool Air Intake hose.

Check to be sure you didn't disturb the coils and their wires, likewise the injectors.

Maybe your plugs decided they need attention now?

I checked all the hoses but will recheck. I have a 2011 with only 50K miles on it. I thought plugs would want attention at 100K.

I would check the mileage with the trip odometer and take the miles driven and divide by gallons pumped. I would use the same pump, gas station and I prefer to fillip in the morning. See if it is the same as the gauge.

x2 - and to get any worthwhile mileage calculations you really need to calculate the mileage over several tank loads - a single tankload, or the instantaneous readouts are not going to be very accurate at all. There are just too many variables involved for a quick and dirty calculation.
