Intake Removal

I've been meaning to check the air cleaner on my '08 HHR but haven't figured out how to get the big black cover off the top of the engine. I talked to a guy at the dealer and he said every service guy complains when they have to replace the air filter on the HHRs. Can anyone help explain to me how to get the thing off and get to the air filter?

It's really not as hard as it looks. I'd guess it took me about 10-15 minutes to replace my air filter! It just looks bad, but it's not....

Spray some WD-40 or silicone around the studs that the cover grometts locates on & it will come off easier. fwiw.

I really dislike the stock air box design with regard ease of access. I also don't understand why the HHR didn't get a more accessible design like the Cobalt.

Thanks! Hopefully I can get to it this weekend. Any other recommendations for maintenance at 55,000 miles?

Thumbs up

That depends on whether you want to wait for trouble to happen, or you want to make sure some "piddlin' crap" doesn't ruin your day. One thing that comes to mind is the cabin air filter(overlooked way to often). It is electrostatic and will be absolutely black when you change it. It's not hard to change, but it can cost up to $15 depending on where you get it. Internet sites are the least expensive. It is located behind the glove box.I'm sure there is a thread on here somewhere with pics. The dealership will charge up to 60 to replace it. Anything else depends on your ride. At that milage most of us have done sway bar end links, shock/struts, sway bar bushings, ect. It all depends on what you want out of your car. Happy Motoring!
