I might try Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 next time as I just bought (2) 5 qt. containers of that. They were just $20 ea. at Walmart and you get a $15 gift card in the mail. $1 per qt. of full synthetic is not too bad!

Been giving this alot of thought lately....currently using Amsoil 0-30. Use itn in the Harley too. Now in the bike, the Amsoil is great because of the heat qualities. On a hot day regular syn oil will drop press to 5 psi at idle( this is normal) Amsol keeps me at 20psi.This is good for a air cooled eng where you need this type of protection, but in a daily driver (car)that sees an occasional red line and a stock production motor I'm starting to think its overkill. The water maintains temperature, so heat is not a factor.20 years ago M1 was about the only syn oil avail and it worked great on the older motors. Now we have better metals, clearances and design and controls, so M1 would stilll be a great choice. Its getting hard to justify $8 a qt oil for a daily driver , especialy if it was naturally aspirated. Now, if I had a high dollar motor with lots of high dollar mods and design I would no doubt and without question use the best there is,period. These cars don
t need all the hype with the designer oils.20 years ago M1 took our cars to new levels, with modern equip it does even better. Be we americans not satisfied with the best, always wanting better always have to go with the best of the best, and the manufacturers feed upon this and sell us whatever it is we think we need. There are a zillion cars out there that do not use the designer oils , race and street and do just fine. Have not had any oil related failures and have lasted a long time using smart regular maintenance. There are cars out there still using dino oil and are doing just as well.Like has been said many times over and over again, use the manuf suggested oils and you'll not have any problems.Even you tuners, until you go INSIDE the motor, and start using exotic parts,do you reallly need anything different?. Yeah yeah, peace of mind and all that, but what about all the others that don't use it, they have a peace of mind too, they don't even think about it, some could care less and put thousands of trouble free miles on their cars. My wifes last car is a good example..Jiffy Lube oil changes,,drive thru car washes and all that. Never been to a shop, only problem was a worn out batt and a bad TPS sensor besides the usual tires and brakes.Jiffy lube oil..you can imagine what went in there, yet,no problems!Sold it after she got her Woody HHR, didn't have to, but wasn't a car I liked (Pontiac Sunfire)80k and never fussed over, mostly neglected except for clean and oil changes.Anyways..just food for thought, you've read all the pro's con's but in reality meet the oil specs and enjoy the ride. If you Have to do 3k oil changes, use dino oils and save the costs(except turbo), just use a good filter(most of them are, whens the last time you holed a motor because of the filter?).If you have to spend 2 to 3 times whats necessary to accomplish the same thing, the manufacturers thank you for keeping them in business. Me, I believe I'm going back to M1 and enjoy the savings.....( I used to be hard core gotta have the best oils, but funny thing is I used dino oils in all my dirt track cars and never lost a crank, but then that oil got changed every week).

The oil filler cap on my HHR SS reads "Mobil1 5W30", so I comply. For perspective, I use and still use "dino" oils in many of my other vehicles and really do not see a benefit using "designer" oil in them. My other vehicles consist of a 22 year old Silverado, a 22 year old Suzuki Samurai, a 9 year old Olds Bravada and a 7 year old S10 Pickup. Oh yeah, there's a 14 year old Isuzu Pup in there as well. My Ford E450 Motorhome doesn't count, because I use synthetic oil in that one (only because of the recommendation in the manual). All are in tip-top shape and run like tops.

Oil

I am going with M1 or Syntek. When I first got my crotch rocket I tried different oils and now use Mobile 1 4t in it. I tried Honda HP4, Amsoil, Repsol, and M1. M1 made my bike run 4 degrees cooler. I even went back to Honda HP4 on one oil change to make sure of my results. Less heat means less friction.

Whats up with the oil life in the DIC ? It will take you to 10,000 miles between changes ? I think I will change oil more frequently than the DIC says. I used to turn wrenches for a living and I know what skipping oil changes or not changing at all does to a motor.
