Scratched wheels.....Grrrrrr!
Hey HHRr's
I have the 17" high polished wheels on my 08 LT2. Almost from day one and Ive had it since 12/12/07, Ive noticed scratches on my wheels. I have to assume its from crap that hits them while driving. I believe they are clear coated. Does anyone have the same problem and if so, is there a remedy to clean them up again?
Thanks!
Don

I have the same wheels, believe I read someplace that they are clear coated as you said. No scratches so far but I know the winter salt and brake dust will at some time attack them as it did on my Alum wheels on my Silverado.
my 06 has the same wheels, and I bought it used. There are some scratches...mostly around the outer edges of the spokes...
being a former tire guy, I can tell you...whoever installed the last set of times on my car, did a number on the wheels.
You could consider having them re-painted/clear coated...or, depending on how much clear there is, you can pop one off, lay it on a bench, and try to wet-sand the clear, and buff it...it depends on how deep the clear is, and how deep the scratches are.
if there is enough clear, it's like a paint job...you can buff it out.
otherwise...a body shop can handle them if they get real bad...you'll have to remove them, have the tires dismounted, and take them in to the body shop...they'll sand them down, have them polished, and re-clear them...by the time you pay for that, you could buy another set of wheels.
I dont drive in snow/ice/salt...mine are probably that way from either the last owner taking it to a car wash, or like I said...a tire machine.

The clear on the wheels is a powder coat not a sprayed clear paint. A body shop could strip and reclear your wheel but it will not be as durable. Check around and see if there are powder coaters in your area that could redo the wheel.
I think it blows goats that they are so easily scratched. My god the car has 1000 miles on it and all 4 are getting hammered. To the best of my knowledge I have not ran anything over either.
If you use any kind of brush in cleaning your tires and get it onto your wheels it will scratch them. I noticed this Saturday, so I will be picking up some spray foam tire cleaner. I plan on using some Meguirer's X scratch remover or #7 on mine. I'll let you know the results when done.
