Yes, it is necessary. Otherwise, it dies and the resulting corpse causes concern.
I also have to do this, but I do not have the opportunity. Too laborious, need to disassemble the suspension to get to the bearings. I do not have a prepared warm room for this, the mechanic asks for a lot of money and I can not blame him for this.
I want to solve this problem in a coordinated way. I plan to use bearings from a different industry, not auto parts. Now I have the dimensions and I can work out the nuances.

How you go about lubing them ?
Wouldn't you have to take the strut apart to do it ?

Yes, that’s how I did it, pull the strut, hood the coil springs in my spring compressors and remove the strut shaft nut, lift off the mounting plate, open the plastic bearing , wipe out the old grease, clean the ball bearings, grease the lower bearing, place the clean ball bearings into the through, grease the top of the bearing and then reassemble the strut and remove the coil spring compressors and reinstall the strut.
I did this as preventative maintenance every fall in our Thanksgiving weekend, your Columbus Day weekend.

Thanks for asking, I’m sure others might like to do this in the Snow belt or the rust belt .
