Type of Oil(s) to be used..

Okay, as I am nearing my first oil change on ownership of my HHR, I can't help but wonder, what kind of oils and brands are best for each of the Motors?

-2.0L Turbo w/o Stage 1 kit

-2.0L Turbo w/ stage 1 kit

-2.2L Standard

-2.2L w/ optional after market engine mods.

-2.4 Standard

-2.4 w/ optional after market engine mods.

Thanks all in advance!

I'm using Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic in my 2.4L....... I would say a full synthetic in all of them would be a good idea.

Whatever the Owners Manual and the manufacturer lists......until the warranty is up. Then use whatever you think, or others think, is best.

Honestly, you will get 30 different suggestions for each of the vehicles you listed. But have you EVER heard of a vehicle manufacturer denying warranty because you followed THEIR suggestions.

You might want to do a search. This topic has been covered extensively.

I use Mobil 1 5w-30 in my 2.2. Figure it can't hurt anything.

But in all honesty, I think keeping up on changing your oil is more important than anything. My dad rebuild the 350 engine in my truck in about '95 or so. It has around 70k miles or so on it since then I believe, and it's spotless inside. Use regular Pennzoil 10w30 every 3k-4k miles since then. My '99 Lumina is the same way, every 3k miles.

So honestly, I think it's more important to change your oil frequently than anything else. Although synthetic doesn't hurt at all. May even give you a little extra time/miles between. But I still change my Mobil1 ever 3k miles.

Unless you start modifying the motors innards theres no reason to get exotic with oils...a good syn oil will work in all vehicles unless its a 2 stroke....

This is one of the most over done and over thought issues. A good name brand oil works fine as long as it is the proper grade.

GM for the most recomends Mobil One in the 2.0. Use what the maual says and you will be fine.

-2.0L Turbo w/o Stage 1 kit -i would use GM4718M

-2.0L Turbo w/ stage 1 kit -i would use GM4718M

-2.2L Standard -i would use GM6049M

-2.2L w/ optional after market engine mods. -i would use GM4718M

-2.4 Standard -i would use GM6049M

-2.4 w/ optional after market engine mods. -i would use GM4718M

i buy oil when it is on sale and rebate. i have around 10 oil changes worth of GM4718M rated synthetic that i paid about $2 a quart.

i would use a full synthetic on a turbo or modified engine. the extra cost is nothing, especially if you watch for sales and rebates.
