2.4 Exhaust on 2.2?

Hi, so my current muffler has an exhaust leak at the bottom of it, so I've decided to try and look for an upgrade possibly on the exhaust. I'm trying to decide between buying the walker 2.4 exhaust kit or the magnaflow muffler because they are around the same price. I'm wondering if installing a walker 2.4 catback stock replacement on my 2008 2.2 would make any difference in sound/air flow. The 2.4 exhaust is 2.25 inches in diameter, and they seem to be able to fit. I think oldblue did something similar to this before. I'm not sure which is a better bang for the buck

Yes sir, I sure did! I started at the manifold, changed the down pipe from the weak skinny 2.2 1 3/4 pipe to a full 2” pipe mandrel bent so no kinks! The the Walker cat back, it didn’t make more noise but it did allow the 2.2 to breathe a bit better and picked up a mpg or 2!
the longer resonator was much better at stopping the ricey rumble.

Watch out at the middle flange gasket, don’t over tighten those bolts the flange can flex and damage the gasket causing an exhaust leak.

Okay, it's been a while but just following up on this, I got the walker 2.4 exhaust and left the stock downpipe for now (I'm thinking about replacing it with a ZZP downpipe if it ever does break), but the exhaust went on pretty easily. I left the muffler off for two days and it wasn't that bad of a sound, it was interesting that you can hear burble/pops when in I gear without the muffler. I have the muffler on now and it sounds just like stock, I don't see any improvements in MPG yet but I haven't really driven it that much yet.

The stock down pipe on the 2.2 is very restrictive!

Yep, I noticed that with the 2 cats it has. I'm just trying to get the most out of the stock downpipe for now, but I'll eventually switch it over. It looks like 2 inch piping so there might be a slight but minimal improvement from me switching the resonator from 1 3/4 to 2 1/4

As the exhaust flows downstream it cannot reduce the back pressure cause by the 1 3/4" downplpe.
Air flow will always be restricted by the smallest diameter pipe and cannot increase flow rate.
Thus the reccomdendation to change it out to the bigger 2" version.

Plus the 2” pipe is mandrel bent so no kinks in the bends, smooth flow , no turbulence.

On a 2008 2.2 on a budget program to fix a leak or two I used a Walker 2.4 pipe/resonator with no change to the (highly restrictive) downpipe or muffler. I liked the sound better and my highly unreliable seat dyno sensed an improvement in response and power at higher rpm’s.
