i would not use plastic line for mech gage. they get brittle from heat unless they rated for high temps. had one break when i bumped with my elbow on some car many moons back.

Anybody have any tips on plumbing in an oil pressure gauge? Is it possible to T it to the existing sensor?

Look into an electronic one..or get an aeroforce gage set..I believe it has an oil press function..plugs into the OB port

I was kinda hoping to put in a mechanical one, but if nobody recommends it then I'll just stick with the stock warning light. I was planning on putting in a mechanical oil pressure gauge and a voltmeter cuz the car doesn't have either.

My personal experience with oil pressure gauges: Put one on my 1967 Dodge Dart, then changed the oil stripping the drain plug, all the oil dripped out. The gauge read right where it should have until the banging started.
Thankfully, you could not abuse a slant 6 to death that easily. Anyway, the oil pressure just is not that important in the common automobile. So why bother? |
Call it personal preference I guess... I had the factory gauge go out in my Sierra once. We put in a new sensor and everything, but the gauge still read 0, so we put on a mechanical gauge just in case. I don't really trust the electrical sensors as much as I probably should. Is there any easy spot on the block to tap for the gauge?

Now a days the oil pressure is tied into the fuel pump so if oil press drops off the pump shuts off..this is so the pumps not running after an accident and possibly pumping raw fuel on the ground with the eng forced to shut down and broken fuel lines. I have raced (dirt circle) engines where the oil pressure would remain with 1 1/2 qts oil in the pan with a slight flux in pressure..@ 7500 rpm! But the pulsing press is what told me something was off..turns out the right valve cover wasnt on correctly and pumped the oil right off the head and thankfully no damage..and where I sat you had no sight down that side of the car and no rear view ( dirt late model). A good gauge gives realtime readings.. cheap ones dont.
Ideally you want the oil port to be the farthest point AWAY from the pump..that way if theres a leak it will show up before you run out. |
So I guess what you guys are saying is if i put in an oil psi gauge to go with an electrical one? I know its not necessary but its somethin I wanna do. Would I just splice the wires to the ones off the sensor on the block?
