HID headlight conversion
Is this kit real?
I've been looking for "plug and play" HID headlight assembly conversions. I just happened to be doing a search on eBay and ran across:
Fits 06 11 Chevy HHR Amber Black Bezel Headlights Lamps AC Slim Ballast 6K HID | eBay
Has anyone purchased and installed this?
These are from a Hong Kong based company (with a warehouse in California) which sells a lot on eBay and come in chrome and black housing versions. They claim to be SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) & DOT (Department of Transportation) approved.
The HID headlight thread I started myself 4 years ago is closed, so I am adding this to an old but active thread.

When I replaced mine, I bought a pair of ready to install units, all tested and all I had to do was plug them in. The housings on my originals were badly failing and buffing/chemicals did not do any thing.
Plug them in?
You can't just "plug them in" with an HID conversion because the ballast has to mounted separately. Either you didn't mention that part or you don't have HIDs.
I ordered the set on eBay for about $161 when it went on 10% off sale. I will get professional installation locally. This was the only remaining modification I had intended to make, but was unable to get done, within a year of buying my HHR in 2009. That's when all the other stuff mentioned below was completed.

My hi-low headlights (35w 5K) and fogs (also 35W 5K) was about $80 shipped.

Wow $161! That's a lot for a set of HIDs...I'm guessing you picked up a set of Morimoto's but even that seems high. It's a really simple install...like Soulman said it's pretty much plug and play...the toughest part is deciding where you want to mount the ballasts. I'd definitely get a relay kit unless your HIDs came with a relay.
It's all fresh on my mind because I just swapped out my headlights for a set of custom made projectors. I had to run relay's and all for them. I already had a set of relays but I had to run new ones for the projectors.
custom made projectors
About 3 years ago, I paid someone to construct a set of custom made projectors starting with a set of stock headlights and substituting the main headlight with a projector beam assembly from another vehicle. That would include mirrors and such to avoid blinding other drivers. Not strictly street-legal as not approved for use in an HHR, but legal on another vehicle in which the projector beam had been installed (before it was destroyed in a crash). Unfortunately, the technician damaged the original headlight assemblies and could not complete the modification, and I was refunded in full.
Could the owner who did this provide more details and price information on the modification?
The $161 I paid was for an entirely new set of headlight assemblies, street-legal, which includes the ballast transformers, but I'm not sure about relays. The high cost is presumably because entire light assemblies are being replaced rather than bulbs inserted into the factory housings.

If you paid $161 for new housing/ballast and HID bulbs then you came out okay. There's several businesses out there that will do a custom set of projector headlights for you that will include the HID bulbs and in most cases they will provide all the needed ballasts and relays needed to hook it all up. I paid right at $350 for mine which included all new housing, mini H1 projectors with custom painted shrouds, relays (no ballasts since I already had nice ballasts hooked up). That included shipping and all too.
