HID kit installed
HID kit installed
I'll try to get some pics, but I didn't get the install done until midnight last night, and in the last few days as soon as I walk out the door, my daughter wakes up and my wife can't get her to sleep, so I don't want to chance angry girls.
I went with the dirt cheap kits at ddmtuning.com. They're $75 shipped for our cars with hi/lo kit. They supposedly have a lifetime warranty, though it seems a little sketchy to get things covered from the looks of google results. Still, the price is nice for something that isn't Xentech (which I understand to be the spawn of satan).
Install was pretty easy. I had the biggest issue getting the bumper off. First time I have pulled it, and apparently I can't follow simple directions with pictures and video.
The wire harness they include has a common positive but a ground at each end. I had a bit of a hard time finding a good ground within range of the little 6" wire in the HHR's headlight area. I ended up using a screw to the top inside of the headlight hole, but getting a solid connection was a little tricky. Ballasts were quite small and tucked into some of the air space around the headlight well. The DDM kit's relay just turns the lights on for DRLs, so you don't lose those. The bulbs' sockets were just a tiny bit too lose' when you turned them in to lock, they weren't tight enough to lock. I just cannibalized the rubber seal from my old lights and added it to the new bulbs which made them thick enough to lock well. Other than that they seem like a pretty decent kit for the money. I don't have any experience with other kits to give a good comparison, but I don't know what different they might do other than slightly tighter mfg tolerances.
We'll see how things hold up after more than 24 hours though. This morning when I turned Pete on, the driver's side light didn't come on. I flicked them off and back on and it was fine, and never did it again all day. Maybe the cold? Or a capacitor that just need another 500ms to charge?
Will try to get some pictures in the semi-near future, and maybe some install pictures when I pull my bumper again for LED installs.
