Using foam versus body filler

Hello

What do Forum members think of the idea of using foam (as Benji does) for body work?

My idea is to make my SS wagon into an SS Panel by foaming in the back windows and refinishing. Does the foam hold up over time. Does it take paint well or do you have to use body filler over the foam in order to paint?

I have been searching the web trying to find any info on this Foam process to no avail. What KIND of foam do you use and HOW is it applied, etc.?

It seems to me that the foam method would be the cheapest way to do this.

The alternative is to the weld the window openings with sheet metal and refinish. I could do the work but it would be a lot more work and much more expensive.

Check this link out to see what a guy did with foam on a car.

Any information, links, etc would be appreciated.

I'd sell the black 09 window and buy the red panel for sale here on the site, there is a new member looking for a dark interior SS maybe that is what you need to do, a lot less bondo and fibreglass work!

Yikes! I would not do this. Foam is simply a filler for the fiberglass to shape to. It will not be paintable. It is porous. It will look crap. Body work on relatively flat surfaces is really difficult to get to look right.

If you are going to convert to a panel I would get some panel rear doors and weld in some panels over the rear windows. Even at this, the steel panels will have to be worked on an English wheel, welded in place carefully to minimize warping and bondoed in. It will be a big job. .....I'd buy a panel.

I am dealing on the red SS panel but Jerry is working so many hours he hasn't gotten back to me. Then I have to have it shipped 2500 miles.

Boydie , Don means the font in your posts , seems like you are typing in capital letters which indicates a raised tone.
