Gauge Cluster
Gauge Cluster
I am thinking of getting the PFYC retro gauge face. Retro Style Colored Gauge Faces for HHR | PFYC First of all, what is the process to remove old cluster? PFYC also says that for $39.00 you can send your cluster, they will replace the faces and return. Is it worth $39? What is the difficulty level for a newby to do? Thanks for help and patience with my questions.
I did that on my Suburban.
It's easy to do, but you must put the needles back on in the exact position they were in or gauges will read wrong. The needles don't have any indexing, so you can put them on in an incorrect position easily (like wiper arms).

If you don't have a way to power up the cluster on the bench, with the car cold, take a picture of the cluster with the key on, do all the work, put the cluster back on without the plastic face, key on and then place the needles like the picture you took. That's probably the easiest way to get them right the first try. I also put the long needles on only a small amount so I can flick them with a fingernail to move them slightly one way or another. I've never done this on car as I work on Camaro clusters that come in the mail, but I've replaced hundreds of needles on Camaro clusters and I've a set up that points them all in a specific place so putting them back correctly is easy. If you ever see a 4th gen Camaro with a 200MPH speedometer, I did that.
