Let me tell you about Light Grey Cloth Interiors...
What I can say on these cars is the quality of the cloth is terrible. In one aspect it does have a "Clean" look to it and the fibers are tight, certainly not plush in what GM used to offer. I never had a choice on what this car was or had for options as my wife got this before I met her but if I had a choice it would at least have leather, fog lights, and running boards. Call me crazy....
Well anyways, when ever this stuff gets wet, I suck out the water and blot dry as best as I can but there is always a ring that shows were the water was. Its god awful annoying that I really cannot "Spot" Clean the car. I have to clean the whole seat. Suck any cleaner out as well as water. Blot dry the heck out of and at this point, go and get a hair dryer to expidite the drying process.
I have Taupe (light tan or biege) in my 2000 Buick Century (Cloth seats), and 2002 Trans am (Leather seats) and let me tell you, the leather in the HHR are far better looking then I ever expected it to be.
I am very close to start the process of finding a Leather Gut for the interior and a darker one as well. It has to pair up with Purple so choices will be limited but anything has to be better then Light Grey Cloth. At this point, might was well install white and see how bad our cars can get.
BSM - I agree on your issues with the cleaning of the seats. One has to clean the whole panel otherwise you get the dreaded ring. Even a few drops of water will leave rings on the seats, even if they are clean to begin with. I too wish I had leather seats, as our car looks like he77 inside most of the time.
We have a carpet cleaning machine that has an upholstery attachment that sprays the cleaning solution, brushes and vacuums the seats. It does a great job, but it means you can't sit on the seats till they totally dry out. And it can take a few hours for them to be dry. But within a month or so, the seats look pretty bad again. LOL
Have you tried Scotchguarding them? I think I did that when I first got the car - but that was some time ago, and I am not sure if I actually did it or not. hummmmmm

Step 1) car-part.com
Step 2) Search for leather local leather seats
I have an '06 2LT that I've had since Jan. 07 and the only real mod I have done to it is get rid of that hideous, stain creating grey cloth interior. If I put my water bottle down and it leaked a few drops, it would stain. Just a joke. I offered them around for free, w/ delivery and nobody bit on them for a few months to so I tossed them in the dump.
Got a mint condition black leather set for 400 or 500 from a totaled off red 08 LS a while back. Soon I believe I will be dumping some cash into upgrades now that it has gotten over 100,000km.

It is not exactly the cloth, but the backing of the cloth and the padding underneath that make for the ring stains (looks like somebody had a continence problem, can between the legs). My solution was $13.99 seat cover at PepBoys for the driver side and no other seats available, rear seats down passenger side used up by paperwork & laptop.
