2 words - Skyline Drive
3 more words - Blue Ridge Parkway

It's worth the admission since you're near there.
I'd drive it all the way down to Roanoke (Hillsville actually) and return on 81 through Shenandoah Valley.

Have fun

EDIT - While I searched for spelling I found this link that I just added to my favorites and is beckoning me... http://www.blueridgecountry.com/trav...-virginia.html

I've done the ride many times through the years. Make sure to check out Luray Caverns off the the rt 211 exit. Nice little side diversion if you've never seen it.

If I didn't have so much homework to do, I'd be taking advantage of my "forced time off" (unemployment) and going on road trips as well!
Been itching to go up to visit old college friends in Berkeley...

I was in DC for a conference this March and it was cherry blossom season--gorgeous! And what is nice is all the museums are free!

I *highly* recommend the Native American Museum for lunch--food is amazing and a great museum too!

museums

I'm originally from the DC area. The museums are all free, true, however if you are planning to visit the Holocaust Memorial Museum http://www.ushmm.org/visit/ (which I strongly urge you to see - it is truly awe inspiring), you will need to get advanced tickets. They only allow so many people through every hour. Your ticket will tell you what time to arrive. To avoid all the traffic and parking problems in and around the museums, I would suggest finding the nearest Metro station and take the train. DC has one of the cleanest and safest Metro Rail systems around. You can buy a Daily Visitor Pass for $7.50 - for unlimited Metro Rail rides all day and night.

Have fun - It's a GREAT city. I love it there.

Looks awesome

I'll divert to there next time I'm near.

Here's a nice collection of shots of someone else's RT I found at his site when I googled the caverns

I've seen black bears twice on Skyline Dr, just crossing the road. First time I stopped and got out of my car to take a picture then realized how stupid an idea that was.....

There's a hotel on Skyline Dr called Skyland. Stayed there a couple of times through the years. Rooms are like a cabin, really cool.

Avoid the DC beltway from 3 to 6p, and 6:30-11A. 295 from Bmore to DC is a nice trip. I'd meet up, but I am heading to Pa. to visit the folks this weekend.
