Violet died while in motion on Monday (didn't hit a bump or anything, on a very nice smooth street and she just DIED). Managed to pull her into a left turn lane. She wouldn't re start. Dragged her into a parking lot and had to leave her over night. Came back the next day and she still wouldn't start. Rigged up a way to tow her to a mechanic (my dad did all this for me and he decided to avoid the dealership)

They say that they had to replace the fuel pump (and it's inside the gas tank) and charging me over $700.

Is that reasonable or did I get screwed?

How common is fuel pump failure on an HHR? (She's an '06 with about 45,000 miles on her)

I really cannot afford this but my dad didn't call me before the guy fixed it he just told him to do it.

That price sounds about right sad to say. And its not real common for fuel pumps to go out on an HHR but it can happen. The HHR's haven't really been around just long enough I guess to see the average fuel pump life to takes it turn.

 

Some early 06 had fuel pumps going out, or long crank times before starting.
Out of warranty? you might want to ck to see if it is part of the emiss. warranty!!!!

 

PCM/ECM and the catalytic converter are the only items coverd by the 8/80 emission warranty.

 

I've had to do 3 of them, my truck, and my wife's car twice. Think they were each around 5 bucks.

 

She's out of warranty anyway.

yea i belive mine might staret having that problem....if i leave it sit for a couple days takes 2 times to crack it(in for warranty now)but i highly doubt they will be able to fix it...techs down here arent the brightest...

Is this price for factory parts? Rebuilt pickups usually run around 200 and labor typically is 2-3 hours depending on the car. Some cars are much easier than others, but I'd check Alldata or factory SI to get a feel for the labor time.
