'08 2.4 Water Pump R&R

I'm new to this forum, so Happy New Year to everyone! My question is one that is similar to another past post that remained unanswered last time I checked. On my '08 2.4 motor I am confused on the water pump R&R procedure. Various listings for the special holding tool for the water pump sprocket state that the tool is applicable up to 2007 HHR's. An Auto Zone link (http://www.autozone.com/autozone/rep...96b43f80cb2e0c) shows the holding fixture being required for the 2.0 and 2.2 motors, but not for the 2.4 motor on a 2008 HHR. Do I need this tool or not? Thanks for any help in this matter.

The (J 43651 Holding Tool, Water Pump Sprocket) is required when doing a water pump replacement on 2.0/2.2/2.4 engines in the HHR for the 2006-2008 model years.

Failure to use the tool can result in the need to re-time the balance shafts or the engine, and would ruin your day.

Dealers are allowed 3 hours of flat rate time to do the job, it's about a 7+ on the 1-10 pain in butt the scale.

P.S. to the forum!

Thanks for the info 843de...especially regarding the pain in the butt rating...I'll plan my day with that in mind...might turn out to be one of those jobs that makes for fond memories someday (though usually not in this lifetime)...

If nothing else, it'll allow you to use some "R-Rated" language in the comfort of your garage or driveway.

Unfortunately, GM tried to put 10 pounds into a 5 pound sack when it came to stuffing the engines into our beloved HHR's.

While you're working on the front of the engine, give the serpentine belt a good looking over, at five years old it may be a good idea to change it while you're "in the neighborhood".

Welcome to the site here is a pic of the water pump tool in use. There are a few different styles of the tool but they all work the same.

Welcome to the site beltrunner.

My question is, are you needing to change the water pump? Or just asking for the general knowledge.

The water pumps on the Ecotec engines seem to be a sturdy part with a long life. Unless it's a specific pump problem, I was just wondering why the need to change it.

Welcome to the site! I'm wondering also why the water pump change, I have a 2007 2.2 with 148,000 miles no issues yet but wanted to know how you determined the need to replace the water pump. I would think that if it needs replaced then the timing chain and guides kit would also be changed, I believe they come in a kit all together.

if you are in the chain area already no need for the tool.
O saw the tool in a local Zone store the other day. It is not called a water pump tool something like timing chain tool.

The tool is used on ALL years of the HHR and ALL engines.
Here are some photos. Note the stud that is used for a locator.
