2011 Chevy HHR LT Humming Under the hood

Hello everyone, I have been having an issue where my car is making a "humming" noise coming from under the hood. It does it under idle and low load. If i step on it, it goes away. I cant seem to figure what it might be and i don't want to replace parts that aren't the problem. Has anyone had this issue before?

Welcome!

My guess would be either the A/C compressor, the alternator or the belt tensioner. OR, if there is an exhaust smell look at the flex pipe

You can get an automotive stethoscope for about $3, or do the long stick to the ear thing.

to the forums!!

Yes, stethoscope or long handled screwdriver. I like the long funnel myself. Small end to the potential problem, big end to your ear. Maybe make a video and post it here so we can hear it.

Welcome to the site, is it a metal to metal sound? Does it change with RPM increase or decrease? A 2011, do that narrows it down to 2.2 or 2.4, automatic or standard??

I will purchase one today. Its a high frequency squeal so its kind of difficult to pinpoint the source by ear for sure.

No it doesn't sound like a metal sound. No it does not change with RPM. It eventually goes away with a heavier load. So during idle, you can hear it. During light throttle, you can hear it. During heavy loads, it goes away. Pitch doesn't change. Its a 2.4 automatic.

Hmm. Since it doesn't change with RPM, then it's a constant source creating the noise.
My guess would be a PCV issue. Constant vacuum at idle and light throttle. No vacuum at heavier throttle the noise goes away. Maybe Donbrew can confirm my guess and tell you what to check.
