Keep them slippery, I used white lithium grease or silicon spray lube.
I use some tractor grease that's been living in my giant grease gun for years and it's worked perfectly. I've never had the front grommet but the thing barely moved when idling anyway. Just one less grommet to worry about! Definitely grease them though. Some have manhandled the air box too much and snapped the bracket on the back of the engine.
I Hate to bring this topic back up but As I mentioned earlier I was going to talk to my GM parts guy when I got the chance and see if he could shed some light on this Grommet /Insulator /Spacer mystery.
We looked and pondered for 30 minutes but could not come up with a certain positive replacement.
There is not any question that the later models have 2 completely different parts.( front and rear)
I came back and relooked thru this thread again and found Your Post.
I have revalued this post because after looking more carefully I think there is a possibility this Could Be the rear part we are looking for.
This issue is one of the only mysteries I have not been able to figure out on this Vehicle and I am going to order the part #19177872 or 15809013 and find out what it is.
Looks like #12563914 is the correct front isolator.
It's a DIRTY JOB but somebodies gotta do it !!!
Also I have changed my lube recommendation for these isolator/bumper/grommet rubber parts.
I don't use the White Lithium grease on the rubber parts anymore.
I am now using a Quality Silicone grease lube on all rubber grommets & bumpers.
The one I use is made by Trident. I got the small 1/4oz. container to try it and it looks and feels great.
I have applied it on all the bumpers etc. on my current HHR.
I think I found the evidence I've been looking for. The part I suggested before, 25346092(the Corvette part) is also used on the Saturn Sky, #13 in this diagram
The stud that this insulator fits on, #12 in the above diagram, is GM P/N 11570295, the same part on the HHR!
EDIT: wait, that just means the inner hole of the insulator is the same. But if the inner hole is the same, and the insulator looks nearly identical... I'm even more convinced this one will work.

That's the "spacer" #13 in the diagram in post #21. Isn't that already in place on your airbox? OP said it was not the right part, but if you already have it, would be easy to check. But I don't think it's designed to bond 2 parts together, it may be just a bumper.

To me it is obvious there is an error in the Parts diagram as it does not distinguish model years as having different parts and they do.
It could be that they have just called the part a spacer on the back and an isolator on the front. At any rate it is confusing and when the Pro Parts guys cannot figure it out it makes the choices a crap shoot.
I see your point about the Spacer being a bumper rather then an Isolator but I do not recall any other similar looking parts when I last changed my Air Filter.
I am planning to clean my Throttle body and Maf sensor when things warm up around here and I will look it over carefully again before ordering any parts.
