how to i determine which one to purchase? and how can you tell the amp and what that means?

The easiest way is to walk up to a parts counter and say "I need an alternator for a 2006 HHR".

In 2006 both engines had the same 120 amp alternator

I have bought a bunch of them over the years.

Usually I buy the remanufactured Remy brand and it has lasted. None of them have failed.

The Remy is listed as 130 amps on the Rock Auto site.
