Driving home I pushed in the clutch, it went to the floor and the assist spring fell off. I couldn’t find a replacement but I found a spring (not for hhr) in the junkyard and tried to make it work. Anyway..I heard the spring isn’t a big deal and sometimes people remove it.. in any case my car now won’t go into gear while it’s running. Any idea what the issue is?

Welcome to the site, first I see you have a 2008 5 speed manual, but which engine? 2.0 in an SS, 2/2 in an LS , 2.4 in an LT? Are your shift cables lubed and moving or sticking and seizing up?

to the forums!

I edited your thread title.

The spring is no longer available.

You say that you tried to make a different spring work. Were you successful? The spring is a big deal, if the pedal doesn't return, your vehicle won't be in gear.

There was a member who had a spring made, I'll see if I can find that information.

Thanks

Please bear with me if I’m posting incorrectly 😆 I’m still learning to navigate the room. I’m not sure how to answer an individual question but No I was not successful with the spring. I drilled a hole on each side of the bracket to fit the new spring. Then another, then another. Still couldn’t get it to fit. So I tried to bend the much thicker spring and snapped it half. So now I have a half of spring on it. I started it up and it won’t go into gear while running. If I start it in gear it will take off. Everything was functioning perfectly until the spring flew off

Cables

No the cables don’t seem to be sticking or anything, the clutch pedal also returns by itself but to push it down without the spring there is no pressure

If the issue is that the shifter just won't go into position, then you may need to adjust the shifter cables. This provides proper alignment. The adjustment is at the shifter, inside the center console. One cable adjusts the alignment east-west, the other adjusts north-south.

But strange is that the vehicle tries to move with the pedal depressed.
