then you attach a booster pack to the connections under the hood, which supplies power so you can open the hatch.

Leaving the question: how do you release the hood from outside?

However, normally there is enough battery left for the remote to unlock the doors.
Try one of those memory keeper things in the accessory outlet.
After that, unless there is something panelish that I don't know about, it's locksmith time.

Post Battery Jumping

HHR's have an auxiliary battery jump point under the hood. Should be a sticker on top of the fuse box cover giving a how-to (see below) , but if missing, check https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/gene...-manual-3074/? for the procedure. If you use the search box, you'll find various threads about the under hood jump point. There are some sensitive electronics around that area & if jump not done correctly (accidentally / mistakenly touching jumper to other places than the stated connect points) will fry them! or damage them to where you'll go bat-sh*t crazy trying to figure out codes & weird behavior!.Should check a few of them out, as they have real-world experience for doing a under hood jump. Hopefully only need to do it once, but nice info to have in yer memory banks!

some under hood pics ...

@Donbrew - Hunh? external hood release? personally carry spare key in pocket but since ya asked - proof of concept, External Hood Release. easy peasy! Strong nylon string , couple of pieces of electrical tape. securing string in cowl area needs trimming-click the pic!
P.S screwdriver through grill? Try it ...

I just went through this, my wife's HHR, I had the alternator go bad and I was helping at the scene of an accident, so I had to leave it there because they closed the road. When I went back the next day with my dolly, I couldn't even shift it into neutral to load it because the battery was completely dead. I just unlocked it with the key and hooked up booster cables under the hood at the fuse box where the positive post is and the ground on the driver's side of the rad on the inside there's a stud with a ground cable.

Unlocking via the key gets one in to unlatch the hood.
