Best of luck - this is one interesting issue you have there. Might be handy to install a quick disconnect for the battery in the meantime, like what is used in RV's.

Your positive (red) lead needs to be inserted into the "10A" plug. It is in the Volt/Ohms plug in the picture - you cannot measure amperage through that plug.

I have to agree with Laco, there may be and internal short on one or more of the plates.
