Black Smoke

A few weeks ago I installed a CGS Intake on my car. The only thing I have done to it performance wise other than +4 Spark plugs. I was going to lunch one day with my friends behind me. I got on the gas a couple of times and they told me it puffed alittle bit of black smoke. I'v done this before and they never said anything about it. Im kinda concerned about this. Is in the intake I installed? Bad gas? Any ideas?
Thanks

Bosch +4 Platinum. I read the reviews on it and seemed pretty good. Although I think the car calls for iridium plugs? Im going to look at them tomorrow.

Black smoke generally is from a too rich fuel ratio condition. Or......It could have just been "blowing" some of the old soot out of the exhaust system when you stomped on it.
P.S. Stick with the stock iridium plugs. They have proven to be the best plug for these little cars.

Thanks firemangeorge. I guess what I will do for now is try that seafoam everyone swears by. take the plugs out and look at them. Then change them at my next oil change if it keeps doing it.

Black smoke was always a sign of unburned gas. Blue smoke was always a sign of burning oil.

I am suggesting that when you hit the pedal a little of the gas didn't burn and came out the tail pipe as black smoke. Not a thing wrong with it.

I agree the fuel mixture is rich for some reason and not enough to set off a CEL.

Seafoam is not going to fix this. It may just be a condition at WOT that dumps more fuel in than needed. WOT is a open loop in the computer and can many times happen and not set off the CEL.

It may have been doing this before the intake change too and no one was there to see it.

Most SS will smoke a little too with the DI turbo engines as they run on the rich side. Better to be rich than lean in a turbo.

Remember black is rich fuel mixture and blue is oil and white and a sweet smell is coolant.

Just keep an eye on it and watch for a code as one of the sensors also may be failing and causing this and will set a code at some point.

Thanks for the information guys. I'm pretty well mechanically inclined, but have more knowledge in diesels. I'll be keeping an eye on it.

There is something creating the rich condition watch for that.

The Seafoam deal and clearing the pipes may have been a fix for things in the old day but today it is just treating the symptom not the issue at hand.

Could even just have a injector hanging too.
