Both lights are out now

Strange coincidence or what? After removing the engine compartment fuses for the ECM, both the left headlight and left turn signal stopped working. It is dark outside so I have not checked yet. but is there a fuse or relay that operates both of them which I could have moved?

First things first.
Why are you removing the fuses for the ECM? If you're trying to reset the CEL, the normal way is to just remove the negative battery cable for about 10 minutes.
As far as fuses/relays. The listings are in the back of your owners manual.
No owners manual, I know you've read that we have them for download on this site.

Fwiw. (Sounds to me like maybe you leaned on the wiring harness to that side and unplugged a connector by accident.)

Actually I do have the owners manual-and I checked the fuses and one was loose-now the turn signal is working. Connection should be good for the headlight, since the high beam is working. The bulbs are only 4 months old, so one must have been defective.

As for the ECM-the 41 and 42 fuses can be removed to reset it. Easier than going into the back for the battery, plus my aftermarket radio would have to be reprogrammed, which is a bit of a pain (eq settings, clock, bulb color, etc)
I read this tip on another HHR forum, and it works!

If you would have said that in the 1st post, I wouldn't have suggested checking for a wiring connection.
Best to include all the info, our you may get some inaccurate help based on what you posted.

Sorry about that, FMGeorge. I have another thread about my code issue which I started when I failed my inspection, and those details are in that one. I forgot that I did not mention it here. Anyhow, I see there is a separate fuse for the left lowbeam, and I am going to check it right now. I would be very disappointed if the expensive bulbs I put in last October blew out already.

If they were Silverstars, (or whatever they call them) I recall some older threads about them burning out in a short time period. Seems those just didn't hold up very well.

Yep. Each headlight has it's own seperate fuse. 2 hi's 2 lows. 4 total fuses.
1 fuse for the parking lamps.
2 relays-1 hi beam 1 low beam

Yep I had silverstars for awhile they are bright but only lasted me about 6 months to a year max. I think they run hotter and burn up quicker

I have to check-they could be. But the left turn signal blew out also, so I have to pull off the inner fenderwell anyway. At least both bulbs are on the same side. And, after having the fuses out all night, I started the car and it is idleing fine-did so for 30 minutes. But I never touched the gas pedal-afraid to ruin the idle speed

Bulbs are the Sylvania Extreme Vision-100% brighter than factory lights. Pep boys told me to contact Sylvania and tell them one bulb blew out in less than 3000 miles/4 months.

The brighter the light the shorter the life. It's on the back of the package.

I had one SilverStar blow in 3 months, the ONLY saving grace was they were on sale when I got them I only paid $30 for the pair not $40. Replaced the one with the cheap $15, the only singles anyone near me sells.
