The brake light switch assembly is only energized with key on. It is also incorporated into the cruise control-hence only works with the switch on....

Not all HHRs' have cruise conrol.. Mine does, but many do not..

Huh? Where did you see that, its standard on every HHR AFAIK.

I had Onstar* in my head, which is an option..

Yeah, the onstar is tricky, as I bought my 08 it was standard (in Canada), not before though, not sure about after.

A friend in the US has an 09 2LT that came without Onstar* It has this code in the build sheet:

UE0 - DELETE ONSTAR/BLUETOOTH FOR PHONE
