Cel
Ok the CEL came on again today while I was close to Autozone so I stopped in myself and asked the desk dude to put his code scanner on.
He came right out and did so and the scanner they used today worked and said P0442
Evaporative Emission System leak detected-small leak
The dude said it was probably that the gas cap seal was leaking a little or it might be somewhere between the tank and under the hood.
So I asked if they had a new seal or whole gas cap that would fit. I was shocked when we went in and looked one up that they did not have one in stock. So most likely Tuesday I will get one. It will be nice to spend the 13 dollars to get the replacement cap if it keeps the CEL turned off.
I can always hang the new exhaust pipe in the garage until I really need it I guess. Being stainless steel it should keep indefinitely you'd think.

Well I got the new gas cap today and the dude cleared the CEL but it came on again before I got home. The rim of the gas tank tube is a little rusty so I guess I'll waste a scotch bright pad and some paper towels to try and clean it up. Sure wish my code reading Bluetooth dongle would get here today.
I needed some front wheel bearing for the Neon so I went to Autozone to get some. They had a CAN OBD II scanner on sale for around $40.00 so I got one.
It read the P0442 code number just fine and turned off the check engine light just fine as well.
I looked for the hose that is supposed to run from the gas tank filler pipe to the engine compartment to see if it has a hole in it or something but I'm not totally sure I found it,... yet.
Its starting to bother me that I keep getting this same code over and over.

One of the mechanics at the dealer ship said I might have a leak where the fuel filler pipe goes into the gas tank. The service manager estimated it would cost around $1500.00 to remove the gas tank and replace the gasket there.
I'm in no rush to pay for that. Has anyone else had to remove their fuel tank? Got Pictures?

$1,500. sometimes I just don't know what I type. they said it would take around 9 hours shop time to do it, still seems a bit extreme to me.
After checking the tube that goes from the gas tank to the carbon can under the hood I can find no holes but from what I understand the hole might be quite tiny and therefore undetectable to the naked eye especially since there are parts of the tubing that you just can't see.
Replacing the tubing would also be cost prohibitive. I got the new exhaust pipe with the flex joint and catalytic converter and have them sitting on a high shelf in the garage. I've been looking for a decent price on stainless steel pipe and muffler to complete the run. boy do the manufacturers of that stuff want a large price.

Has anybody checked the purge valve and whatever the other purge part is called? There are a couple of youtube vids about p0442/small vac leak.
Here is one that seems to be good.
I did a google search using "p0442 youtube" and got a couple of pages back.
