I was getting both 0013 and 0014 codes so I replaced both intake and exhaust solenoids. They were both full of oil. After the engine ran a few minutes, the 0014 code came back. Over the past few weeks, I have reset it a dozen times and the 0014 code keeps returning. At least I solved the 0013 problem. But what else could cause the 0014 code, or is there a problem with the oil on the sensor?

P0011/P0013 tests the valve operation; if the valve has been commanded open is it open.

P0014 tests the angle of the camshaft vs. what it is commanded to be.

So, it could be the sensor, it's wiring or the cam "phaser".

Thanks, How can I tell which one? And why all the oil? Are they in oil galleys?

The valves control oil flow to the "phasers" to adjust the cam angle. They are supposed to be full of oil.

P0011 is intake, P0014 is exhaust.

Yesterday my 2010 HHR, 80600 miles, had a episode of sputtering and violently shaking. Today it seems to be running fine but the engine light is on. I googled the sputtering and shaking and it said bad spark plugs, air cleaner filter, or coils on the plugs. Now I don't think the filter would cause an engine light. Drove to Advance Auto to get the code from the engine light and it gave P0014 for the Exhaust CMP Actuator Solenoid Control. Now I had the light come on in the summer for one of the Solenoids but don't remember which one and I replaced both of them. Should I replace both again or just the Exhaust one? and Would this even cause the sputtering and shaking I had yesterday?

I'd just replace the exhaust one - but that choice is up to you depending on if you want to spend the $'s (you can keep the current Intake one as a "spare") -and yeah it is likely related.

Is the oil level correct - that can cause problems with the solenoids, and so can going too long between oil changes (the solenoids do not like oil that is too dirty). and of course you are using the recommended oil?

When did you last have the oil changed?
