Just to throw this out there. May be relevent, maybe not.
Your car has the RPD unit on the dash. The car will not run with an inoperable RPD or one that is unplugged.

That works fine.

The vette is different from the HHR; I doubt that is the explanation. Unless, the faulty segment is on one side or the other of the BCM.

There is a TSB with photos about the ECM connector, but I can't find it right now.

But loose wires or grounds , have you checked them.

Are you saying it doesn't have a CAN connection?

There are a lot of grounds. Which ones are you suggesting ?
You would think that if a ground was loose the problem would happen every time I try to start.

It does have CAN, It is just not the same programming, and the fact that guys fixed itself lends credence to the loose connection theory.
