Coolant recovery tank replacement

Hello. I have a 2008 Chevy HHR LT 2.2 liter. I noticed the other day I have a crack in the bottom of my coolant recovery tank. Can anyone please tell me the process to take that out and put a new one in? Thank you.

Thank you for your answer. Can you tell me exactly where the bolt is I need to remove?

From the black cap follow the neck down and that bolt is off to the side of the neck

Thank you very much.

I also just now installed a replacement coolant recovery tank!

I also picked up this part at the junkyard over the weekend. I filled it with water to make sure there was no damage before I purchased it.

Getting the old one out wasn't as easy as removing one bolt. I had to remove the hose from the radiator as well to make room for it to come out. :cooldance:

Cool Beans !!! I marked the level on my tank about 2 inches higher than factory. Their full line is too hard to see. I used a Sharpie. And easy to spot.

It doesn't overflow with A/C is off, so it is fine. Been running it this way for a decade at least.

The coolant itself is rather hard to see.
Best way I have found it just to use the light on my phone and hold it on the other side of the tank, shows up clear as can be.

Yes. Hard to see with my old eyes. I replaced the lower half of the overflow hose with clear plastic tubing. I can now just look at that and see where the coolant level is.

:george: Great idea. I still like the full level higher than the factory has it..

My personal experience is that over filling impedes the overflow. The column in the tank is too heavy for the coolant to push up. YMMV.

My personal experience of over 10 years doing this, is that it has no effect on the overflow.. Just saying..

YMMV means "YourMileageMayVary"

When I was having troubles I found that a near full tank did not get any fuller after warm up. But lowering the level it did. Maybe I had something else going on, don't know.

But why would you have a near full tank on cold engine ? I don't get that. I would have vacuumed most of that out. & the YMMV, I was wondering about .. LOL

Strange, my tank will rise 3 inches or so after good running. Then overnight it goes back down to my mark.

The reason I never liked that factory level was it was at kinda almost empty point, & if it ever did go lower, it might suck in a bunch of air..

donbrew 08-24-2020 08:52 AM

If it is near the bottom when cold, that means the radiator has already sucked everything it needs, leaving plenty of room for overflow when the engine warms up. Depends a lot on your definition or "near full", and as I tried to indicate there was experimenting going on.

Cool, hope your experiment was successful..
