Couple strange electical issues

This is on my 20008 LT, 1st my engine temperature sensor fails randomly. Always works when ambient temp is around 70 or greater, mostly never when less. I work with and understand thermistors so this is baffling to me. Their usually good or bad. If its a wiring issue I dont understand how ambient temp would effect the connection??

2nd random power steering failure. Somtimes 5 minutes sometime hours of operation without a problem. If I turn off and restart it works again until random failure?

This vehicle did have an ignition interlock at one point (Breathalizer)

Believe it or not i would bet that you need a thermostat. If the engine does not reach the proper temp with In a certain time the temp gauge will not read engine temp and your digital display will show ---

Your steering issue is probably the power steering motor.

I don't think the temp unit is a thermistor. How do you mean "failing"?

Power steering motor is failing probably. There are many threads on the subject, one in the How To Library.

But they could be related. Check the connections to the under hood fuse box, several have reported loose nuts there lately.

Here is a thread about thermostats and temp gauges.

You can find more info with the search tab at the top of the page.

Here's one about the power steering motor. There is also a how to thread on how to replace it

the coolant temperature just reads dashed and the instrument one just stays on cold when it's not working. Both read fine with warmer oudoor temps. Heat still works so engine is warming up.

It may feel warm but if it is not warming up fast as it should the computer will set a code in memory and disable the coolant gauge. That may be why it works when the weather is warmer outside.

Take it to your local parts store and have the codes pulled, then post 'em up here.

X3 or is it X4?
- If there is enough coolant - the thermostat has failed, and is stuck in the open position as noted above.

- replace the power steering motor, as noted above.
