Autozone or most other autoparts stores can scan it for free.

+1 for Advanced Auto Parts. Some places will even give a printout of what the code is and what it means.

AutoZone will do printouts, but will NOT clear it.. "Liability" reasons.

Sort of......

There are "cables" available..... Quotated because they are much more than just a cable and come with software for your laptop. Such as my Trifecta setup, that "cable" is a RISC computer that talks to my laptop via USB, it can read and clear codes besides flashing the ECM with a new tune. Pretty sure HP tuners can do the same. This setup would typically run more than a scanner, so if cheap is what you're after this isn't it.

Don't think you will find anything like the dongles from the old days that shorts a couple of pins and honks the horn so many times...... (three short, one long. Etc.) These computers are so much more complex. The above mentioned auto parts houses are your best bet for low cost.

no...im taking about like maybe a key dance? like... turn the key 3 time, pause, turn the key 3 more times, then the codes pop up on the gauge cluster display. or press this and that so many times. i know how to for chargers, pt cruisers/neons,older f bodies,f150's... so theres gotta be a free way to pull these codes out in one's own driveway. just wondering if anyone knew. i know about auto zone, and i may or may not but a cheapy scanner for like 20 bucks. but theres gotta be a free way...

The only free way is somebody owns a Scanner Tool and does it for you. Sorry! You must have the scanner tool. The $20 ones may be for the cars that you could "dance" with, so be careful and read the docs! "Electrical Equipment May Not Be Returned" etc.
