Flex Pipe

Coming home from work the other night around 11 pm and I was about a mile from home (rural area) and a huge ass trash panda ran out in front of me, I ran it over and it got hung up on my flex pipe bracket. FFF.. So it stayed hung up and I pull in the garage, I look underneath and its still there... ****...
I backed up and luckily it dislodged.. Anyways it did something to my flex pipe, exhaust got louder and while at a stops while idling the exhaust was getting pulled in. Well that flex pipe is part of the cat, so I replaced that. Really really surprised car was running based on how the mesh blocked the exhaust.

I bought one those Ebay cheapo CATs….not enough catalyst in em. Had flex pipe bellows burnt/broken in OEM…so bought flex pipe had friend muffler shop weld it on….I built a jig to bolt to on both ends to get clocking and length tight… then cut old flex off

That flex pipe is not the original. The original is accordion not mesh. Be sure to check your motor mount, the reason for most flex pipe failures.
Look through the oblong hole in the passenger side wheel well; if the idler pulley bolt head is not centered you need a new motor mount.

This oblong hole….

If the bolt is low enough that you bought a 25 mm socket in there, the motor mount is toast!

Idler pulley bolt is centered, I had changed idler pulley and tensioner and belt 3 months ago. Good to know though!!

True…one I bought and used was not OEM but pretty sure it had bellows inside the mesh inside and outside…I could see it in there….otherwise it would leak exhaust gases thru the stainless wire mesh. Anyway, so far….working fine for me.

Most replacement flex pipes are stainless mesh with a short collar at the flange.

How can a mesh coupling be exhaust gas tight without a bellows inside?

Very tight multi level weave. It actually flexes not bends.
