Front Axle Question

Had my Panel in the shop a couple of weeks ago and the mechanic showed me how the front axles where the spline goes into the transmission will slide in and out about 1/2 to 3/4 inch when he pulls on it. It doesn't come out completely. So is this normal or do I have a problem? The car drives fine, has no vibration, even up to 85 MPH, and handles great. It has me a bit worried though. Chuck

It’s good, normal for the cv axle movement, it doesn’t move that much when driving.

That is if you can't see the splines moving. The can on the trans end is a slip joint, the axle can move in and out, not the splines. The splines are supposed to be locked in with circlips.

When the you hit or go over bumps the axles need to be able to move as the shaft angle changes.
