Gas in the oil?

I got a code saying my bank 1 O2 sensor is bad. And i was just changing my oil it had a very bad gas smell to it. could it be the O2 sensor making it burn rich or some other reason? and if i replace the O2 sensor will it be destroyed by the unburnt gas i smell. the amount of oil seamed the same no major overages any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think you are right re: the O2 sensor problem may have let it run way rich for a while and contaminated the oil.

If there were no other codes thrown other than the O2 sensor, I'd run it for a while with the new O2 sensor and the fresh oil, and check the oil again after a bit.

Oil change and new sensor, run it and check the oil after a bit.

Agreed, plus spark plugs will be pretty carboned up, I would think.. But if you correct the problem, they may clean themselves..

How are things going with your HHR and the O2 sensor?

True sleeper, but....... If the plugs are carboned up or "glazed", it won't run efficiant while it is trying to burn off the deposits. Could foul the O2 sensor again or set off other problems. Best bet is to replace the plugs while doing the other repairs.
