grinding,crunching noise when backing up

I have had both front wheel bearings replaced and front struts, but when I go to back into my garage and am turning the wheel, I hear a crunching kind of a grinding noise, as I back up and turn the wheel slightly. WHen I drive the car along the road, no problems, only when backing up. Wondered if it might be springs or something. Anybody else have this problem?

Welcome to the site.

Details please people. Details.
Where is the noise, front, rear, under the dash, etc.

Just based on your 1st description, it sounds like you keep running over a metal garbage can.

Seriously though. If you could be a little more precise, we would love to try and help you out. Does it do this every time ? Or just on occasion.

x2 ^

Also, how does the vehicle handle ? Does it like to wander all over the road? Do you notice any grommets down there that are rotted, or missing? Is everything tightened to spec?

My wild guesses include: rear spring seats, rear control arm bushings, Lower Control Arm bushings, front spring seats, rear drum brakes worn out, rear hubs.

I hear the noise only when backing up , to me sounds like springs are rusty or something rubbing, happens all the time when I back into the garage, but when I drive the car along the highway, no problems at all

All 4 spring have upper and lower isolators that are made of plastic or rubber. When the isolators wear out the springs sit directly on metal.

Well. After your 1st post, I ask where the noise was coming from. Now, you post again with the basic same description and still no answer to where the noise is coming from.
Sorry. I don't think I can help you.

If I was feeling better and could drive, I'd scoot up to Oakville and check this issue out for you!! But, I do like a guessing game and assuming the grinding only started after the front hubs where replaced, then I would suggest take it back to the mechanic who did the swap for you and have him fix the issue, most likely the little spacer between the hub carrier or spindle and the hub assembly. Or the bolts were not torqued to spec. Please let us know what the outcome is!!

took it to mechanic and he said it is upper strut mount bearing and its not a critical issue, nothing will fall apart, he said it would take about 3 hours labour plus parts, total cost 400 to 500, but he said, if it were me, I would just leave it alone and keep driving it..no damage will occur
