Head Replcement help needed

Hello everyone, I need help some serious help. First off im a part swapper, i never ever have attempted to go this deep into a motor. normally i would just swap the motor but with only 83k i thought i could pull off a head swap. i did all the testing and found i had a leaking exhaust valve. so i purchased a rebuilt head. i have followed the directions and torqued and degree wheeled when needed the head bolts, manifold bolts, exhaust bolts, cam bolts, valve cover bolts. now here is where the problems start. First after installing the the new lower sprocket, cam timing chain, guides and sprocket bolts and tensioner - all new - you are to tap the chain to engage the plunger. I could not tell if this worked. so i put the old lower pulley bolt in and rotated the engine. got a little click. read post saying it will cure itself when running ok. next i put the timing cover back on, i did not torque to specks, next installed crank pulley when i went to rotate the pump to align the keyway it was very difficult as in rotated very hard. i got the pump and key lined up and put the old bolt back in for a test fire.( I do have a new bolt.) So i fired it up. sounds like a diesel not quite but close. it looks like the crank pulley is rubbing on the cover. i only tightened the bolt enough to rotate engine with compression. So how many things have i messed up? how could the pump get messed up? i never changed those crank gaskets - i did not have that special tool. I went to pull the lower pulley off but it was too hot gave it a tug but now movement?

Welcome to the site! perhaps the timing cover is not seated correctly allowing the pulley to rub it, you'll have to take it off and look for any rub marks

If you rotated the crankshaft counter-clockwise you made the chain jump a tooth.

What "pump" are you talking about?

Try putting some spaces between lines, I can't understand what you are writing.

Serious rubbage

Ok i got the lower harmonic balance pulley off. the belt back side was definitely making contact with the cover towards the top right of the pulley. Also there was contact around the seal area.
First i suspect since this is the only thing i did not torque this is the problem. But i also think i may have an install issue on the black guide the goes up and down almost vertical.
I see diagrams that some show them going either way. Maybe this made the cover bulge in this area causing the rubbage?
Sorry i suck at grammer.

I never rotate engines CCW, maybe a slight 1/16-1/8 turn to get things aligned. When i aligned the pump as i think it is? I rotated that cw to line up with keyway. I think it runs to good to have jumped a cog or maybe so?
Is that not a pump on the backside/inside of timing chain cover?

Another update. got all buttoned up. took it for a drive and it sounded like a $500.00 beater. after about 5 miles, i decided to giver hell. tromped on it and heard a snap. Thing runs and sounds fantastic now! Was this the plunger mechanism for the timing chain? anyway i hope my frantic plea for help. Helps someone else!

What pump? What belt? Are you working on an HHR or a VW?

What i was describing is attached to the lower timing cover(on the inside of the cover), the harmonic balance shaft has two flat spots on it. when you slide in the harmonic balance shaft into the cover you align that first then u align the keyway. its some sort of pump or oil slinger? its a oil pump like i thought. i dont know how to attach a photo. look up "GM 2 2 ECOTEC ENGINE TIMING COVER W OIL PUMP 4281"

That search led nowhere with Google.

When I replaced the harmonic balancer on mt 2008 2.2L I just had to align the keyway, it slid right on. Maybe something changed. I don't have the time right now to look.
