HHR LS stuck in anti theft mode
HHR LS stuck in anti theft mode
Hi guys,
My friend bought an HHR LS model I believe it's a 2008
When he bought the car the radio didn't work.
However I'm not sure how or why his reasoning was to plug a 5 amp fuse into a 2 amp fuse and now the car is stuck in anti theft mode. No crank, nothing just a series of clicks. Checked all the fuses and they were good. Tried the Key relearn 3 times like it said, the battery was fully charged and still nothing. Any ideas of what to do now

96.67% of the time, a no sound radio is because of bad speakers. Wut! Beleive it. All 4 failed and silent door speakers. It’s a common condition.
Stuck a 5A fuse where?
Consult the owners manual for the antitheft reset procedure. Ignore interweb instuctions.

Which fuse did he change? Here’s a chart of fuses and locations

The ant-theft reset is: start the car with a programmed key.
Are you unlocking the door with a key and locking it with the fob?
Did this start immediately after the 5 amp fuse was inserted? Why was it inserted? Which one?
Are you using the 30 minute learn procedure in the Owner Manual (link in my sig)? Or, some BS you found on the internet?
That procedure is for adding keys, there are 10 slots available for keys. The car came with 2 keys, if the recall has been done 2 more were added; that is 4 used slots, leaving 6 available. How many times have you done the correct relearn?
Does the key have a + in a circle stamped on it?
Was the recall done (link in my sig)?
A dead battery will set the anti-theft light. The anti-theft system turns the injectors off, can you drive the car?
Make for sure that fuse #8 and #10 on the BCM (inside fuse box) are good.
When you close the doors does the dome light turn off?
If you are using the mobile site on a phone or tablet and don't see my sig click on the hamburger/menu icon at the top left of the page and choose "view full site",

It was bought second hand, it was driven to his house. Initial problem was no power steering and then he got a new battery and it wont start. Turns out it was a fuse under the hood. All was great and dandy then the 5 amp met the 2amp. There is no more power what so ever other than the constant flickering of the antitheft light. Battery is fully charged, he was given two keys says bell on it and a number of 307 on them. I did the 30 minutes and the only thing that happened was the dome light came on but still locked. It sounds like clicking in the bottom fuse box where the 5amp fuse was used. ill have to go look and see what takes a 2 amp in that section as he doesn't remember where he put it. So from there all fuses have now been checked and are golden and still nothing happens.
Sorry I lied I grabbed the wrong keys
he only has one key and it has a fob but the fob didnt work i just changed the battery and made sure it was the correct battery as well. Ill perform tomorrow and provide an update then

I seriously doubt putting a 5 amp fuse in a 2 amp slot is your problem. Unless, its blowing the 5 amp one.
More likely another cause.
And now it sounds like you may have tripped the anti theft by trying an incorrect key relearn.

We formerly owned a 2008 in addition to our present 2011. Coincidentally, they had identical key cuts. With embarrassing frequency we would attempt to use the wrong key in both cars. No crank, no start, of course, which was mystifying the first time, but it never resulted in putting either car into anti-theft mode.

Like I said earlier: the anti-theft turns the injectors off. If it starts and drives it is something else.
The key relearn is for ADDING keys, not fixing the anti-theft. There are 10 slots for keys in the computer memory.
There are 2 anti-theft systems; contents theft deterrent and car theft.
