Question HHR vs. Tundra

I am considering trading my 06 tundra (17 mpg) for a new HHR. What kind of all around gas mileage can I expect-high/low with the 2.4L, Automatic. How would you rate overall reliability. Consumer Reports rates them as average with brakes being the main troublespot.

Expect anywhere from 20 - 25 mpg for average driving.

Lowest I've had is 24, highest was 36. Just depends on the type of fuel, load, weather, road conditions, and speed. I also have 51, 700 miles on one of the earliest ones built and I'm still running the original pads and rotors.

Being light footed on the gas, I've average a tad over 30 mpg with in my 2006 2.4L auto. Worst has been 25 and best has bee 35 on the flat roads of Florida after 28K miles..

We get about 18mpg out of our 05 Silverado so we probably have a similar drive, and habbits. We average about 25-26 on mid-grade gas in our 2.4 HHR auto and it has been 'mechanically' very reliable. However, it has been to the dealer for service. They have replaced the the HVAC controller, weather stripping around the driverside window and the front brakes have started to pulse which probably means new rotors. All in all though we've been very pleased with the HHR.

Thanks for sharing your impressions and experiences. I am currently looking at a new '07 (either panel or one with seats) the dealer lists it at just under $19k they are both an LT with the 2.4, leather (pretty much loaded). Is it a good price or should I hold out for better.

Panels are so cool that if you can get by with a two seater-- get it. 19 is pretty good for a loaded 2LT if that's what it is.

After rebates, discounts, & GM points, I paid about this much for my fully loaded 07 LT2 last September.

Go for it!

I don't think you'll be sorry about purchasing the HHR. The price sounds good. My GMS employee discount on my '07 1LT was $18,084 (list price of $20,800). My gas mileage runs 27-28 in my daily drive (blend of highway and city street), and my regular 201 mile jaunt down to Alabama nets me 31 (2 adults, 4 dogs and supplies for the weekend, 75 mph, cruise control).

Shop a bit

Go to GM.com and click on Chevy. Select the HHR and build one yourself. You'll then be able to see retail. It will also show the rebates and any GM loyalty (any other GMs in your household?). Finally, go to Edmunds.com and you can see dealer cost. You'll note that there isn't a lot of markup anymore on these cars. Look for '07s as the rebates used to be $2500 on them and $1500 on the '08s. Not sure if they are offered any more.

I just love mine.
