HVAC control

Hi everyone. Wondering if anybody else has this problem. Every 2 years I have to change my HVAC switch panel. It begins by my losing the highest fan speed, then they all start to go. Also, the lights will flash intermittently.

I learned a trick-I break off the tabs on each end so I can install it without removing the radio.

Never heard of anyone else having the problem.

High speed bypasses the resistor path to ground. Maybe the ground shorts to voltage? Or somebody tapped into the wrong wire.

I am the original owner and all my wiring has been neat, so that shouldnt be an issue. Besides, when I replace the unit, it works fine for 2 years then begins to crap out. As I said, I lose some of the fan speeds one by one, and the lights for the HVAC panel begin flickering off and on intermittently.

If there was a problem with any of the wiring there, wouldnt the unit not work from the beginning? If seems to me like something internally is wearing out. Like the rotary switch. I noticed that when I jiggle it the blower turns off and on. Very strange.

What I was thinking is maybe a LED or some other circuit got wired to the ground that goes to the switch and causing the switch to burn out. Something like that.

The switch supplies ground to the motor via the resistor pack. High speed is "no resistor". Arcing is what causes switches to fail.

Most people assume the switch would control the "hot" side.

So the question is: have you added any electrical wiring, no matter how innocent? Or changed any wiring.

And you cant just buy the rotary control that is bad-you have to buy the entire panel with all the switches, and it costs $150
