HHR's do have a Throttle Position Sensors(TPS), but they are integral to the throttle body assembly.(Making replacement of the entire throttle body necessary if the TPS has failed)

A P0121 Code can mean...

* TPS has intermittent open or short internally
* Harness is rubbing and causing an open or short in the wiring
* Bad connection at the TPS
* Bad PCM (less likely)
* Water or corrosion in connector or sensor

I'd start by checking the electrical connections at the throttle body and making sure that they are secure.

Then examine the wiring for chafing or breaks.

And you may also want to clean the throttle body itself using "Throttle Body Cleaner" and a lint free cloth to carefully wipe up the dissolved carbon goop.

Extreme caution should be used in handling the throttle butterfly, move it slowly and carefully. Snapping the butterfly open with your fingers or a screwdriver can cause problems with erratic idling.

It seems that most of the times when this code comes up it turns out to be a wiring problem. There are a few youtube videos that explain how to check the wiring at the throttle body and what to look for.

The 2006 has a throttle cable, at least the 2.2 does. I think that might be the OP's question. Not sure about the 2.4 and TPS, or for that matter TPS on a drive by cable throttle.

Hate to differ with you Don, since it doesn't happen often.

But no throttle cables on the '06-'11 HHR's, they have been drive by wire since day one, just a position sensor(APP-Accelerator Pedal Position)on the gas pedal assembly, which sends a reference voltage signal to the ECM.

That signal is then interpreted by the ECM which operates the throttle butterfly by using an actuator motor as seen on this disassembled unit which failed due to excessive carbon buildup.(You can see where it jammed and stripped the gear)

I have been laboring under a misconception. I swear I remember seeing that somewhere.

I was wrong, never mind.

Here is a youtube video that I like when your are checking wiring. This video is not for your code and is not an hhr but looking at the wiring as the video explains can help you inspect your wiring.

No worries Don, to be perfectly honest, my brain went into "Full Stop" mode until I double checked the parts diagrams for the '06 model year.

Totally off topic, but I do miss the days of Rochester Carbs, HEI ignition systems, and TH350 Turbo-HydraMatic transmissions.
