My 2.2 gets ~30mpg back and forth to work (50% highway/stop lights) and ~35mpg or better on long trips.
I wonder if this is the norm between the 2.2 and 2.4 engines.
I get about the same in my 2.2 5 speed.

Mine idles a bit rough at stoplights..can feel it in the when and brake pedal...does seem a bit better now than when I bought it but maybe I'm used to it. The 2 rental HHR's that I drove before did not have this issue....smooth as glass at stoplights

No idea what causes this

I just took mine to the dealer tonight to get this same problem figured out. He wnet eith a test drive with me, while I drove, and seen the same problem. It happens everytime I push in the clutch on mine. I have the 2.4 with the five speed. Only 1700 miles and it's already died once on me from this. He says this is definatly not supposed to happen. When I get it back, I find outit goes in on Tuesday next week, I'll let you know what I find out.

I have an auto 2.4L. I am getting the RPM drops as well. I think it is the air conditioning compressor coming on. I was running the defroster the last time it happened.

I have also noticed that the car seems to want to surge forward when I am stopped. I'll be stopped and the car feels like it is bucking. Again I am attributing it to the A/C compressor coming on.

Sorry to say I didn't take her in. Not that there is any connection at all, but it quit doing it after I lowered it this weekend. I really can't put a connection to the two but I'll take it If it starts happening again I'll probably take her in, but until then all is good in HHR land.

My HHR was doing this also... I kept taking it in because the gas mileage wasn't what it was when I first got it and it kept feeling crazy at stop lights.. Finally the 3rd time they replaced a spark plug... It runs like a champ now. Don't know if it could be the same thing for anyone else but the guy said he had done a couple that week that I took mine in.
