I have a 06 hhr 2.4l and on occasion I have had starting issues. so I turn my key and the starter engages very briefly and it does this 3 to 5 time then it starts. any suggestions?

Hi, Brian, to the forums!!

Do you mean you turn the key once and the starter engages and disengages 3 to 5 times? Or you have to try turning the key 3 to 5 times, with the starter engaging briefly each time until it finally turns over enough to start?

Has the ignition recall been performed yet?

Welcome to the site, how old is the battery? How many miles in the car? How many miles on the spark plugs?
Any CEL codes?
Enquiring minds want to know!!

yes the recall has been done. and it is 3 to 5 turns of the ignition. and I noticed tonight that if I put it in neutral it starts on the first attempt after it doesn't start the first time in park. could that be a neutral safety switch??

battery is 18 months old I have 13000 miles on the car. I changed the spark plugs and coils a month ago. acdelco irridums and acdelco factory coils. the only code I have is o2 sensor lower.

What code number? No such think as "o2 sensor lower", even as a misleading description.

Why change the coils?

Usual hard start cause is a failing EVAP purge valve. If you have some O2 codes the EVAP test will never run.

Get the actual code , like P0420, for instance, post it here, just the code.
Your local parts palace can read them for free.
Have you checked the ground wires?
