Got a call from my dealer, and it has a bad ignition lock solenoid. Of course the part had to be ordered, so now I play the waiting game.

They replaced the shifter mechanism. Had to order the part, took 2 days - the good part, they sent me to Enterprise who put me in an 07 HHR.

Everything seems fine now.

Looks like I'll be making another trip to the dealer. The key problem is back, and worse than it was before. Apparently the ignition lock solenoid was not the problem.

I had the same problem, the dealer replaced the shifter. There is a small micro switch that goes bad. I was told that it was a known problem from GM.....Replace the whole shifter, problem gone.

Well, after 18 Months it looks like we might be having key problems now too! The Wife just told me she had trouble getting the key out yesterday, and then again today. She said she just started the car up again, then turned it off, and the key came out OK!

My problem didn't show up until after a year of ownership. Also mine acts the same as yours. I'm not sure it is related to the shifter becouse, as your wife did, I restarted the car (or just turn the key back and forth a bit)then shut if off to get the key out. It's going back next week to have it looked at again.
